  • A Bosporus Adventure

    Yazar: Mary Mills Patrick

A Bosporus Adventure is a history of the Woman's College at Constantinople by a former president. Mary Mills Patrick was born 10 March 1850 in Canterbury, New Hampshire to John & Harriet (White) Patrick. She graduated from the Lyons Collegiate Institute in Lyons, Iowa, in 1869. In 1871, by appointment of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, she became a teacher in a mission school in Erzurum. In her four years there Patrick learned ancient and modern Armenian. In 1875 she was transferred to the American High School for Girls in Üsküdar, and she became principal of the school in 1889. During her summers she lived in Greek villages. She thus was able to add Greek and Turkish to her repertoire of languages. After a study furlough in the United States she received a master’s degree from the University of Iowa in 1890. In that year, after much planning and the securing of a charter from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the American High School became the American College for Girls at Constantinople, later known as Constantinople Woman’s College. Patrick served as president of the college from its opening. Her summer studies at the Universities of Heidelberg, Zürich, Berlin, Leipzig, Paris, and Oxford resulted in a Ph.D. from the University of Bern, Switzerland, in 1897. Her dissertation was published in 1899 as Sextus Empiricus and Greek Scepticism. When the college was destroyed by fire in 1905, a new site was acquired in Arnavutköyü on the European side of the Bosporus. A new charter in 1908 ended the college’s ties to the mission board, and in 1914 the new campus was occupied. Patrick kept the school open through the Balkan Wars, the Turkish revolution, and World War I, and through those changes it evolved from a school primarily for minority Greek, Armenian, and Bulgarian Christian women into a leading centre of higher education for Turkish women. She remained president until her retirement in 1924, after which she moved back to the United States. The American College for Girls later affiliated with nearby Robert College for men.

  • A Bridge of Culture

    Yazar: John Freely

How An American College in Istanbul Became A Turkish University

During the 38 years of its existence Boğaziçi University has perpetuated the cultural traditions it inherited from Robert College, and it is generally considered to be one of the top undergraduate institutions in the world, with outstanding graduate programs in most fields other than medicine and law. Though it is a Turkish state university, the language of instruction in almost all courses is English; the majority of its faculty have doctorates from American universities and most of its outstanding students go on to do graduate studies at universities in the U. S. Our students come from every province of Turkey and from more than sixty other countries, for Boğaziçi University is a cultural beacon that shines across national boundaries and internal political divisions, distinguished by the diversity of its student body and faculty and its tolerance of ethnic, religious, and cultural differences. And so my book will examine the ways in which Robert College and Boğaziçi University have been a bridge of culture between what orientalists have called East and West.

Dünyadaki ilk örneklerinden yaklaşık 400 yıl sonra, 1994’te kurulan Türkiye Bilimler Akademisi, evrensel akademik değerler, ilkeler doğrultusunda şekillenmiş bir kurum yaratmayı hedefleyen bilim insanlarını bir araya getiren önemli bir girişimdir. 2000’de Akademi’nin başkanlığına seçilen Engin Bermek, sekiz yıllık görev süresini merkeze alan çalışmasında Türkiye’de ve dünyada bilim dünyasının girdiği yeni döneme, ortaya çıkan arayışlara ve düşünce akımlarına ışık tutuyor. Dönemine ilişkin özeleştirel değerlendirmeleri, Akademi benzeri bilim kurumlarının yapılanmasında, izleyeceği politikalarda ve etkinliklerinde yol gösterici nitelikte.

Bermek, Akademi’nin kuruluş aşamasından başlayarak, kendi döneminde yürüttüğü faaliyetlere ilişkin ayrıntılı bilgi verirken, evrim konusunda aldıkları tepkilerden, evine düzenlenen bombalı saldırıdan ve Akademi çevresinde yaşanan belli başlı çatışmalardan bahsettiği bölümlerde dönemin genel atmosferini de çarpıcı bir biçimde yansıtıyor.

Öznel görüşleri ile kurumun faaliyetlerini dengeli bir biçimde ele alan Engin Bermek, bugün artık özerkliğini yitirmiş olan Akademi’nin 18 yıllık tarihini, yaptığı gözlemlerden ve dünya akademilerinin temsilcileriyle yaşadığı deneyimlerden yararlanarak sunuyor. Türkiye’nin Bilim (Akademisi) Sınavı, siyasal erk ile bilim arasındaki ikiliğin bilimsel yapılara verdiği zararı, günümüzde kurumların içinde bulunduğu durumun toplumun geldiği noktayı yansıttığını apaçık ortaya koyuyor.

Shaping New Minds and Robert College in Late Ottoman Society (1863-1923)

This book is dedicated to Robert College’s 150th anniversary. Being founded by American missionaries in Constantinople in 1863, the college kept its vitality due to its ability to adjust the sound theory of education introduced by its founders and instructors to the changing social and political context, as well as its alumni who distinguished themselves as professionals and leaders, but above all as characters. The book approaches the Ottoman period of Robert College’s sesquicentennial history by focusing on certain hitherto neglected topics and issues related to its nature and educational ideals, as well as to its student body, and by exploring the college’s archives, dispersed in Turkey and the United States, the government archives of Ottoman and early republican period, and other vernacular archives. The book moves the object of research from the subjects who were responsible for the foundation, function and development of the college toward the object of their educational activity: the students. To this aim the book is focused on the student body and space is provided for the voice of students as preserved in their recollections.

The book delineates the specific place and role of the college in the field of Ottoman education by promoting Protestant ideals through liberal education. On paper the college was an independent institution that was not aimed at proselytizing the local peoples but in reality the religious character of the college was indisputable. The so-called “secular Protestantism” affected the whole concept of education practiced at the college and it affected more or less the students’ mindset. The college put emphasis on the formation of strong characters in its students so as to make them able to take responsibility for their own life and development. It was achieved, not only nor even mainly through the course of studies in a wide variety of fields, but also through the all-round atmosphere in the college and especially the personal relationship between the students and their instructor. On the basis of statistics drawn from various relevant sources, the book traces out the dynamics in student enrollment and outlines those periods in the college’s history in which certain nationalities were prevalent, not only in terms of physical presence but also in terms of influence in the student body. The book defines subsequent “national” periods, specifically “Bulgarian”, “Armenian”, “Greek”, and “Turkish” periods, paying special attention to the relations between the nationalities represented in Robert College’s student body. The book provides also prosopographical research of the Bulgarian and Turkish students, based on data collected from the catalogues of students, preserved in the college archives.

The book combines various approaches characteristic of different fields and thus is a multidisciplinary study of Robert College’s Ottoman past. Being focused on certain issues related to the nature and educational ideals of the college in close relation with its student body, the book reveals previously unexplored or partly and insufficiently studied aspects that have much to do with disciplines and sub-disciplines such as social history, history of religion, history of education, cultural studies, and political studies.

    Çocukluk, Tehcir, İstanbul

Jandarma keseyi kabul etmeden önce bir an duraksadı.

  • Against the Devil’s Current

    Yazar: Malcolm Stevens, Marcia Stevens

The Life and Times of Cyrus Hamlin

    Godfrey GOODWIN

This is the life of a determined man whose name should be included in any list of outstanding individuals of the nineteenth century. Cyrus Hamlin was much more than a dedicated missionary. He was a revolutionary educationalist who wanted learning to be a balance between the skills of the hand and the skills of the mind….

No detail escaped this self-taught engineer who trained his students to bake bread which delighted the wounded from the Crimean War and who also invented primitive washing machines to deal with their blood and filth sodden uniforms unchanged since the battlefield. Deservedly, it was the whiff of newly baked bread that led Christopher Robert to land perchance at Bebek and so to meet Hamlin. From this encounter came the money with which to found Robert College which is now the University of the Bosphorus.

Hamlin had to fight the Ottoman government and the Mission Board in order to achieve his college only to hand it over to his son-in-law: but he was to become President of other foundations yet. He lost two loved wives but wisely married a third and continued to have children; and if he lost his favourite young he had reason to be proud of his many surviving progeny. There was no shortage of misfortunes for him to rise above, perhaps because he was quick to take advantage of his chances. He was a man of absolute rectitude, a natural disciplinarian who was able to thwart brigandly Montenegrin labourers bent on murder and, far more dangerous, the self-righteousness of a bigoted professor. But he was also a sharp-witted and a sharp tongued no-nonsense fellow who got on well with the British Embassy and residents, whose sons were among the earliest enrolled at his college. It was natural that his fellow missionaries should find him difficult because he did not behave according to the rules, least of all when he made his original foundation by the sea at Bebek prosperous by commercial enterprise and so able to support its penniless students, many from the Anatolian hinterland.… One of the delights of this book is its revelation of the fun that he had with his children, romping around on all fours between the hundred jobs he succeeded in doing each day.

  • Fifty Years in Constantinople

    Yazar: George Washburn

    And Recollections of Robert College

This book has been written at the request of many friends of Robert College. It embodies a history of the College from its foundation to the close of its fortieth year, 1903. I have chosen to make it a record of personal recollections, because this seemed to be the only way in which I could write freely of events and personalities as they appeared to me at the time, without compromising the present administration of the College or making it responsible in any way for my opinions or actions.

It has been my purpose to make it as far as possible a history of the College, but the picture of a college in Constantinople during these years could not be drawn without a background of incidents, personalities and events, such as would have no place in the story of a college in America. On the other hand, it did not seem wise to make the background more attractive than the picture, or even to set the latter in the frame of a detailed history of the Turkish Empire. The Introduction is a review of the events of the last fifty years which have led to the recent revolution in Constantinople.

    A Remembrance By His Son

The biography of Dr. Floyd Black, the President of Robert College and the American College for Girls in Istanbul, Turkey between 1942-1955 was written by his son Cyril Edwin Black, upon the death of his father. The unpublished manuscript which was meant for the members of the Black family and friends, is an interesting account of the fruitful career of Dr. Black which began in Sofia College in Bulgaria, and continued in Robert College and the American College for Girls, in Istanbul, Turkey.
The biography of Dr. Floyd Black provides insight into the lives and personal commitment of Americans to the ideal of educating the modern individual in a college curriculum of humanities with modern sciences and professional training that honored the basic awareness of the need for respecting the differences among the student body coming from a rich background of divergent cultures.

    Yazar: Keith M. Greenwood

In October 1857, two young brothers …were ushered into the drawing room of Christopher Rhinelander Robert, noted New York merchant and philanthropist… They requested Robert to help finance the opening of an institution of higher learning in İstanbul.

So begins the story of the founding of Robert College, the first American institution of higher education abroad, and predecessor of Boğaziçi University, nearly one and a half centuries ago. It is first and foremost the story of the character and aspirations of Cyrus Hamlin, the driving force behind the establishment of the school, and of the complex relationship betwen him and the other two individuals who made the realization of this educational project possible, Christopher Robet and George Washburn. This in itself is a fascinating and compelling tale, one that will hold the attention not only of those interested in the institution itself but of a much wider readership.
