A Critical Reading Course

This book is the result of more than five years’ work and experience in the teaching of critical reading and thinking skills to university students under the course name Advanced English at the School of Foreign Languages, Boğaziçi University. The course is also now under way in the MA programme of the Department of English Language Teaching at Yıldız Technical University. It is based on the author’s lecture notes much evolved through interaction with her students over the years. The main purpose of the author in the writing of this book is to provide teachers/learners with a useful medium for making the teaching and learning of critical reading and thinking skills possible and widespread; an urgent need in her view especially in Turkish schools and universities. Therefore, the expected readers of the book are all those teaching and studying English for Academic Purposes at various universities in Turkey and similar countries, as well as all those who feel the need to teach and develop critical reading and thinking skills as part of an advanced – level English language course in various other institutions in Turkey and elsewhere.

Dr. Hülya Bartu (BA Hacettepe University, MA and PhD Lancaster University, U.K.) is currently working as an assistant professor at the Department of English Language Teaching of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Yıldız Technical University, İstanbul, Turkey. She has more than twenty years of experience as an English language teacher, teacher trainer and an academic in various institutions in Turkey, including Boğaziçi University, where she spent seventeen years of her career. She has organized many seminars, presented at conferences and published mainly on classroom research, cultural issues in English language teaching/learning, teacher/learner development, English for Academic Purposes, language teaching methodology and curriculum design. She has also been actively involved in integrating language teaching research and practice for teacher/learner development by means of setting up and organizing Exploratory Practice (EP) teacher groups in Turkey since 1994.

    These essays challenge the notion that translations are derivative products of no significant function in literary and cultural history. They draw attention to ways in which modern theoretical and historical work in Translation Studies and scholarship in Ottoman literature and culture can share a forum for questioning and problematizing established perceptions and research paradigms.

    A Voyage Through American Literature and Culture Via Turkey is a Festschrift prepared by Belma Ötüş Baskett and Oya Başak and edited by Nur Gökalp Akkerman to celebrate Prof. Dr. Sam S. Baskett’s 90th Birthday with the contributions of his friends, colleagues and former students from around the world.

    Sam S. Baskett, Professor of English (Emeritus), Ph.D. Berkeley , University of California, taught at Michigan State University for forty years, as well as other universities in various countries like The Universita Autonomo of Mexico, Hacettepe and Bilkent Universities in Turkey, Kobe College in Japan, and University of Surrey at Roehampton in the United Kingdom on Fulbright and State Department grants and direct appointments. One of his first works was American Identity used as a Freshman English textbook in many universities for many years. He has contributed chapters to many books and anthologies have been reprinting his seminal essays on a number of writers, including Jack London, T. S. Eliot, Ernest Hemingway, and most recently, Yaşar Kemal and the Turkish Nobel laureate Orhan Pamuk. He is the recipient of Distinguished Faculty Award of Central Methodist College. He now lives in Istanbul and contributes book reviews to journals in the United Kingdom.
